Let the child try to write her name on paper.
Have the child write her name name on a drawing she has made.
The child learns to write many letters in her name (particularly if the name is short). Letters may be incorrect or in the wrong order, but the child understands that letters comprise her name, are separate, and in a line across the page.
Early childhood educators and parents should provide paper and pencils for children to use in all rooms of the house and in all centers of the classroom. Children can practice drawing observations and writing lists, their names, and so on with letter-like combinations, combined letter sequences, and invented spelling.
