Organizes marks that serve as writing “words” in a linear fashion, and in rows

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have paper and pencil or markers for the child.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to write under one of his drawings his name and a label for his drawing.

Behavior Observed

The child knows that letters of a word follow in a sequence. He also makes “words” in a list.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Adults should let children read their writing to them, and comment on the aspects of the writing that indicate knowledge of writing. Comment on the correct letters, sequence, spaces between words, etc. Ask, “What can I help you with?” This supports children’s efforts and helps them know that adults will help them and not criticize their efforts.
