Watch the parent or another adult and child read a new book together.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child questions about who was in the book and what happened.

Behavior Observed

If the child was interested in the book and involved in reading it, he will remember who was in the book and a couple of events.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Discuss with the parents the importance of not only reading books, but talking about them after reading them. Remembering what was read is a major academic skill. Practice in the early years in a simple dialogue about the book, lays the foundation for later work in school.
