Describes familiar objects without seeing them

Situations for Observation of Skill

Discuss with parents the child's ability to describe familiar objects when requesting items at home.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child about favorite toys or objects in his home environment. Pretend you do not know what the object is and have him describe the object.

Behavior Observed

The child describes familiar objects.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Discuss with the parents the importance of not only reading books, but talking about them after reading them. Remembering what was read is a major academic skill. Talk about the location, characters, actions, motivations, and feelings in the book. Reading for understanding lays the foundation for later work in school. Also, encourage parents to talk to children about items that are not present in order to work on memory skills.
