Listen to the child when discussing topics that are important to her.
Determine if the child has a pet, takes special lessons, or likes a specific topic or movie. Discuss the topic with regard to her beliefs. “What is the best way to take care of a dog?” “What do you need to do to be a good soccer player?” etc.
The child has established opinions about the topic. (i.e., Are there good and bad behaviors or rules that should be followed?)
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to discuss a wide range of topics with the child. Sharing opinions and the reasoning behind them builds a foundation for higher level thinking.
