Gains more control of intense feelings like anger, but still needs adult guidance

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in a small group activity in childcare or at a park with other children.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation may be needed, as conflict among children may arise naturally.

Behavior Observed

The child may get angry with another child. The child uses words and tries to resolve the issue, but resorts to asking an adult to help find a solution.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage adults to help children recognize their feelings (“I see you are getting angry.”) and then step back to analyze what they can do (“Think about what YOU can do to make the situation better.”)
