Watch the child during daily routines and play activities with other children.
If the skill is not observed, the adult can ask the child questions. For example, “If I were to bring one of my little friends here for a day, what would you tell him about what he can and can’t do here?”
The child verbalizes to other children what she should or should not do. If the adult has to ask questions, the child will detail the rules and her own beliefs about what is appropriate for the setting.
Early childhood educators and parents should make a few important rules that all children can learn. Teaching right and wrong come through modeling, discussing what has happened or may happen, and talking about what we need to do to make sure we are all safe, happy, and caring.
