Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview the child about a book he has recently had read to him.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to tell you about a book he liked. Ask questions related to where the story occurred, who was in it, what happened and why.

Behavior Observed

The child remembers settings, characters, events, details, and cause-and-effect relationships in books.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can expand their questions from simple, who, what, where questions to ask, “Why?” “How?” and “What should…?” questions. These involve higher-level thinking.
