Examines different types of art and explains why she likes or dislikes it

Situations for Observation of Skill

Listen to children discussing their own and peers art, as well as those of professional artists.

Elicitation Strategy

Lead a discussion about the components of art, shape, color, movement, content, emotion, etc. Look at various pieces of art and talk about what elements are appealing to the children. What lines, shapes, colors, arrangement, or content do they NOT like? Why?

Behavior Observed

Children talk about their preferences and give reasons for them. Some reasons are basic (e.g., “I like the colors.”) and other reasons are more reasoned (“It makes me think of a fun party!”)

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Opportunities for children to explore the components of their own and others’ art is an important aspect of creative development. Provide opportunities not only for making art projects, but also for analyzing and discussing them.
