Situations for Observation of Skill

Provide materials that can be used in many ways.

Elicitation Strategy

Using a topic of interest to the child, ask the child what she would like to create. Observe as she plans and constructs her product.

Behavior Observed

The child comes up with an idea of what can be made from the materials available. Freeform materials require the child to visualize possibilities, and then make a plan for construction.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to provide time, space, and encouragement to use freeform materials for creative projects. Discuss what the child created, why, and how she produced it.
