Observe the adult and child talking about a book they have read.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to tell you about a familiar book.

Behavior Observed

The child of this age recounts many details of the book, location, characters, actions, feelings, and ending.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Discuss with the parents the importance of not only reading books, but talking about them after reading them. Remembering what was read is a major academic skill. Talk about the location, characters, actions, motivations, and feelings in the book. Reading for understanding lays the foundation for later work in school.
