Asks questions to understand what another person thinks

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe children in discussions at snack, in the car, or during free play.

Elicitation Strategy

If needed, play a game where each person raises a topic for discussion. What is your favorite movie (game, sport, etc.) and why?

Behavior Observed

As the child gains a greater understanding that others have different feelings, she begins to ask questions about others feelings, preferences, and reasons for their thinking. She may also argue positions.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Children have strong opinions. Encourage children to try to understand others’ opinions. Model asking others questions about what they are thinking and why. Explain your feelings and attitudes as well.
