Listen to the child talk about his favorite books and books he wants to read or look at.
Have a discussion about what books the child reads at home or checks out at the library. Give the child an opportunity to pick out several books of his choice from a large selection.
The child verbalizes his preferences and rationale for his favorite types of books.
Giving children options in books is important for their ability to pursue their interests. Visits to the library provide an opportunity for children to learn how books are categorized and located in the library. Parents can work with librarians to help children learn to find what they like in a bookstore or library.
