Have a variety of types of books out for the child to examine (in the classroom, school library, or local library).
Talk about what books the child picked and why he selected the ones he did. Discuss authors and label the types of books that were selected.
The child verbalizes his preferences and rationale for his favorite types of books.
Giving children options in books is important for their ability to pursue their interests. Visits to the library provide an opportunity for children to learn how books are categorized and located in the library. Parents can work with librarians to help children learn to find what they like in a bookstore or library.
