Situations for Observation of Skill

Talk about a favorite movie or TV show episode.

Elicitation Strategy

Tell the child the name of your favorite kid’s movie. Ask what the child’s favorite movie is. Say, “I haven’t seen that one. Tell me about it.” Ask questions about details if the child omits them.

Behavior Observed

The child relates details from the movie or story, including details of the scenes, actions, etc. They dramatize segments to show actions or feelings.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to talk about what children are reading and seeing on TV and in movies. This is an opportunity for parents to understand what impressed their child and how the child interpreted what the story meant. This provides an inroad for discussion of deeper meanings and messages that the child may have missed or misinterpreted. Such discussions also prepare children to be able to discuss other topics with parents when they are older. The discussion patterns that are established early on are important.
