Some children will do this as a matter of daily play. Talk to the child about her dramatic play and what she has done in the past.

Ask the child what her favorite story, book, or movie is. Then suggest she set up a scenario to act out the story. Be a play partner, and have the child tell you what you need to do to help.

The child demonstrates confidence and motivation to include details. The directions she gives the adults will also reveal the complexity of thinking.

Socio-dramatic play is an important means for children to represent their ideas and fantasies in creative ways. Encourage parents to make a space for this type of play and provide assistance for setting up when needed. If siblings are not available or interested, play dates with peers is important.
