Observe the child in play with peers, particularly in socio-dramatic play or construction play with a joint goal.
Provide idea if needed for dramatic play (e.g., build an airport, go shopping, act out a favorite movie scene).
The child talks about his opinions about what is needed to accomplish the goal. He talks about benefits, feelings, etc.
Negotiation is an important skill. Help early childhood educators and parents model sharing ideas and negotiating over simple things, such as what to have for dinner, what activities to do that day, etc. The key thing is to compare ideas, then talk about advantages, then work together to choose or modify.
