Situations for Observation of Skill

Interview adult or observe the child in the restroom. Toileting is dependent on family expectations and background, and cultural differences. Type of diaper used also impacts feeling of wetness, so children who wear pull-ups may not feel wet.

Elicitation Strategy

If needed, ask the adult about the child’s ability to take care of all bathroom needs.

Behavior Observed

care of bathroom needs independently.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Reinforce children’s independence in self-care. Remind children of the need to have clean bathroom habits.
