Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch face-to-face play between the adult and infant.

Elicitation Strategy

Make vowel sounds, tongue clicks or other interesting sounds in a slow pattern to give the child time to respond.

Behavior Observed

The infant ties to imitate the sounds and/or mouth movements of adults.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Face-to-face sound play is important for speech development. Encourage early childhood educators and parents to do vocal turn-taking play frequently during daily routines and playtime.
