Attends to internal aspects, not just contours

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant’s examination of the environment and items in the environment.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult can position his face close to the child. Observe where the infant’s eye gaze goes. Also hold different objects above the child.

Behavior Observed

The infant’s eye gaze shifts across the internal features of the adult’s face. The infant also studies internal characteristics of toys and other objects presented.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain to early childhood educators and parents how the infant’s increasing visual acuity expands his world. Play with the infant in the face-to-face position encourages the infant to study facial characteristics and learn differences across people. The same is true of objects.
