Observe the infant when sitting in an infant seat or lying down with toys within reach.
No elicitation needed.
The infant intentionally shakes, swipes at or kicks a mobile or toy within reach. This demonstrates his understanding that he can cause something to happen. He also realizes that vocalizing can get adults to look at and talk to him.
Instill in early childhood educators and parents how important it is to respond immediately to the child’s behaviors, such as vocalization. This helps the child learn that he can have an impact on persons in his world. Also explain why is it important to have materials the child can shake, kick, bat etc., so he learns the impact he can have on the environment.
