Watch when requests (both positive and negative) are made of the child.
Tell the child “No” when she is trying to reach or mouth something she should not.
The child is beginning to understand simple statements and pay attention to the intent of the adult. This is the first stage of compliance.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to help the child understand that relationships are give and take. They can ask for the infant to give them an object, come to see them, give them a hug or kiss, etc. Adults need to be caring and not be upset if the child doesn’t always respond. Meet her half-way and reward her for her initiation.
