Observe the child in play with others.
No elicitation needed.
The infant crawls to others to engage with them. He babbles, uses jargon, and possibly a word in a “conversation” with another.
As children move around the room, they seek out interaction and conversation. It is easy for early childhood educators and parents to ignore little ones when engaged in another activity. Encourage adults to acknowledge children, talk for a few turns, and then redirect children with a toy or other activity. Children need to know they are important and worthy of attention.
