Observe an adult looking at picture books or photographs with the infant.

Encourage the adult to share funny aspects of the pictures or make sound effects to go with what is shown in the photos.

The child recognizes funny pictures, such as a baby with spaghetti on his head.

Children can recognize pictures of familiar objects or items that have been frequently labeled in a favorite book (e.g., duck). Encourage early childhood educators and parents to name pictures and ask, “Where is the…?” (e.g., ball). Adults can also make reading fun and encourage imitation of sounds, when they make sound effects while reading (e.g., “vroom, vroom” for a car; “grr,” for a bear; “mooo” for a cow, etc.)
