Uses both fine and gross motor skills to explore and experiment with dropping, throwing, and other cause-and effect actions

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child moving around the environment and exploring toys and materials.

Elicitation Strategy

Provide motivating objects for the child to explore.

Behavior Observed

Infants will sit, crawl, pull to stand, squat, and stand at a low table. They will drop and throw items, roll balls, push buttons, pull things out of cupboards, etc.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain to early childhood educators and parents that exploring the environment and experimenting with objects is how children learn. Picking up thrown and dropped items can get tiresome, but encourage early childhood educators and parents to tolerate several repetitions, as this is how infants learn about depth and distance.
