Domain: NC Foundations for Early Learning: Cognitive Development (CD)

Subdomain: Mathematical Thinking and Expression

Goal: Children compare, sort, group, organize and measure objects and create patterns in their everyday environment.

Skill Progression: Measuring

Age: 10-12 Months

Click here to go to all skills for ages 10-12 Months.

Amount: Puts as many small objects in a cup as possible, showing interest in adding “more”

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child playing with small bowls or a regular cup along with any small object such as blocks, small plastic animals, puzzle pieces, etc.

Elicitation Strategy

If the child does not spontaneously start putting things in the bowl, the adult can do so with his own bowl. This will motivate the child to try.

Behavior Observed

“Filling it up” becomes a great game. The child wants to see how many pieces will go into the bowl.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to have cups in the bathtub, sandbox, etc. for “empty and fill” play. Children learn about amount by experimenting with different materials and containers.
