Offers a child a toy; toy play becomes the center of social interaction with peers

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the baby when another baby is close by. Have several toys within the infants’ reach.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The infant stares at the other infant, mouths a toy, then holds out the toy to the other infant. The infant may not actually release the toy. The toy is a gesture of invitation to engage.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

At this level, the infant’s focus shifts from people to toys. She is still interested in social engagement, however, and objects become a means of initiating social interaction. Encourage play dates as a means of supporting the development of early social interactions and sharing.
