Observe the baby when another baby is close by. Have several toys within the infants’ reach.
No elicitation needed.
The infant stares at the other infant, mouths a toy, then holds out the toy to the other infant. The infant may not actually release the toy. The toy is a gesture of invitation to engage.
At this level, the infant’s focus shifts from people to toys. She is still interested in social engagement, however, and objects become a means of initiating social interaction. Encourage play dates as a means of supporting the development of early social interactions and sharing.
