Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch the child’s interaction with the adult when the child is approaching materials that are out of bounds for the infant.

Elicitation Strategy

If the infant does not naturally approach something that is off limits, place a glass or something the child would not be allowed to have on a table where she can see it.

Behavior Observed

The infant approaches the off limits object and looks at the adult to see if she is doing something acceptable.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help parents understand that when the child looks at them, she is looking to see how the adult feels about what she is doing. Adults can reassure the child when appropriate and give her a “no” when the situation is not safe.
