Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child when objects are presented at varying heights and in different orientations.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult places objects on the table or up in front of the infant and presents objects in different orientations. For example, present a cup or toy first upright, then sideways.

Behavior Observed

The infant rotates his wrist and hand and orients the fingers up or down, depending on the direction of the object and the presentation by the adult. For example, objects on the table are grasped from the top or side. Small food pieces are grasped with the hand open and facing upward.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to notice how the child is learning that the position and type of object influences how he reaches for the object.
