Observe the child and adult with markers and paper.
The adult makes marks on paper and then gives the infant a pencil or crayon and paper. Both now make marks together.
The infant watches the adult and then bangs the marker on the paper and looks for marks.
Early childhood educators and parents often do not think about letting infants mark on paper. Observing adults making marks, however, motivates children to want to imitate them. Children like to see the effect they can make on white paper. With supervision, parents can let children experiment with a crayon or magnet doodle board.
