Observe the infant with dirty clothes or diapers.
When a diaper is changed, the adult points to the dirty diaper receptacle or the dirty clothes hamper and asks the child to throw the dirty one in.
Children are beginning to learn routines associated with dressing and undressing. With a prompt of a point and verbal suggestion, the infant will drop items in the right place.
The infant loves to do what the adult does. After several demonstrations she can do simple tasks. Encourage parents to let the child drop clothes in the washer, trash in the trashcan, pull tissues out of the box, etc. These little acts help children learn more complex sequences of self-care skills.
