Goal: Children compare, sort, group, organize and measure objects and create patterns in their everyday environment.

Skill Progression: Measuring

Age: 12-15 Months

Time: Aware that certain events follow each other (nap, drink)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in a bath or outside with a container of water. Provide several containers for pouring.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the adult about the expectations the child has during the day. Do certain things have to happen upon waking up, after nap, etc.? What are examples?

Behavior Observed

The adult will give examples of behaviors illustrating that the child demonstrates an understanding that specific events occur after each other.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Opportunities for “empty and fill” build the basis for later measurement of quantity. Because these activities are often messy, parents may avoid them. Encourage them to allow this during bath time and outdoor play. Helping to add ingredients in the kitchen gives children another chance to gain an interest in measurement.
