Chooses books for adult to read by recognizing the picture on cover

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child and adult sharing books about familiar objects and animals.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to pick out a favorite book to read. Then have her turn the pages and talk about the book.

Behavior Observed

The child demonstrates knowledge that books illustrate things he knows.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to let children select the books they want them to read. This gives the children choices and autonomy. Children will tend to choose the books they recognize from the covers. Adults can also involve children in reading by letting them name objects.
