Look at family photos and books and discuss with the parents the child’s memories for places in the car or in stores.

Without naming the people in the picture, point to various people and ask, “Who’s that smiling person?” Look at familiar books and see what the child recognizes and names. Ask the parents if, when in the car, the child points to familiar homes, stores, or other places.

Children of this age will indicate they remember people in pictures by pointing and naming them. They may not know the words for places they go in the car, but they indicate recognition by pointing or showing excitement about being in a familiar place (like their favorite fast food restaurant).

Encourage parents to point out and name landmarks they pass in the car. This will enhance memory for places and build vocabulary. Also encourage looking at books, magazines, and photos to identify things the child may recognize. As the child’s vocabulary grows, she will be able to share more of what she remembers.
