Pretends to sleep, eat, talk on phone (Auto-symbolic play)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have a variety of household items in a play area, including dishes, utensils, blankets, etc.

Elicitation Strategy

Be a play partner for the child and begin to role play being a mommy and baby.

Behavior Observed

The child will pretend to eat, sleep, and may pretend to wash up.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to become involved as a play partner in the child’s play. They can provide ideas, model, and carry on conversations that allow the child to practice language. Ideas for dramatic play at this age come from the child’s daily routines.
