Shows awareness of adult’s wishes and expectations

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch the infant during daily routines with the adult.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

Children remember routines and know what they should do (e.g., drop the diaper in the pail, lie down at naptime, self-feed at mealtime, etc.)

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

As children learn the adult’s expectations they strive to get reinforcement and love. Early childhood educators and parents should be encouraged to reward children’s efforts with hugs and words that acknowledge what the child did (e.g., “You did that all by yourself. Thank you for helping Mommy.”)
