Climbs into adult chair to sit or stand up

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in the living room with toys and the adult.

Elicitation Strategy

Place a desired toy at the back of an adult living room chair. Alternatively, the adult asks the child to come read a book beside him on the couch.

Behavior Observed

The child independently and easily climbs up onto furniture. She likes to sit up tall in the adult chair.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Climbing is now a way to explore, so early childhood educators and parents need to take precautions about things the child may try to climb that may fall over. Supervision is important at this stage, because the child wants to investigate everything. Encourage parents to spend time outdoors and in parks where children can climb safely.
