Throws underhand while sitting

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in ball play with an adult or sibling.

Elicitation Strategy

With the child in a sitting position, initiate a game of catch with a large size ball. Model throwing with both hands under the ball.

Behavior Observed

The child throws with two hands under the ball in the direction of other player.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to engage in ball play with the child and siblings. Explain that the child needs for the ball to be stationary for kicking, as the child is not yet coordinated enough to chase and kick a moving ball. The child is gaining strength so the ball is thrown and kicked further. Keep moving the target a little further away, to encourage using more force.
