Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during self-care routines in the bathroom.

Elicitation Strategy

Do the same with hand washing and drying.

Behavior Observed

The child knows soap and water go on the hands, and rubs hands together.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to involve children in washing and drying tasks throughout the day. Wash hands after eating or playing outside. In addition, children can help wash and dry plastic dishes. Brush teeth after meals to give children practice and build the routine. Include washcloths, toothbrushes, combs and brushes in dramatic play.
