Observe the child in solitary play and in play interactions with others and/or during daily routines with the adult.

No elicitation needed except for asking the name of an object.

The child answers simple “what” questions.

Asking “what” questions gives early childhood educators and parents an opportunity to see what words children know and provide them if needed. Encourage parents to ask, “What’s that?” in picture books and “What do you want?”
