The adult naturally asks the child “What is this?”

The child answers the “what” question with a word or a point.

Sharing picture and simple storybooks with the child is an important activity for parents and the child. The child learns to share joint attention on the same picture, acquires labels for objects and actions, gets reinforcement for answering questions, learns to take turns making comments, and discovers the importance of sequence words, pictures, and actions (e.g., looking, talking, turning the page).
