Observe the adult and child singing and moving to familiar songs or saying nursery rhymes or finger plays.
No elicitation needed.
The child moves to the rhythm showing understanding of the underlying beat. He can also say or sing many of the words in rhythm with the adult.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to sing songs frequently with the child and read nursery rhymes and rhyming books to the child. The rhythm of songs and rhymes is appealing to a young child. Singing and saying rhymes helps the child learn to segment and break words into syllables. This is an important skill for reading.
