Observe the child in daily routines and in play interactions with another.
Conflicts or hurt feelings may arise naturally between siblings or peers. If not the adult can enter the play and pretend to be sad when a child takes a toy or when the blocks fall on her foot.
The child understands that others have preferences. She may retrieve a comfort object, such as a blanket or favorite toy and offer it to the upset child.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to assist children in understanding how to help people feel better. “Maybe he would feel better if you let him hold your bear.” Reinforce efforts. “Look, he’s smiling now. Thank you for helping him feel better.”
