Observe the child with a small ride-on toy without wheels.
Assist the child if needed to get on the toy. Then encourage the child to move forward by suggesting a race or moving to a specific destination.
The child moves both feet together and pushes back to propel the toy forward. Alternatively, the child “walks” the toy forward with alternating feet.
Ride-on toys provide preliminary practice for the young child prior to riding a tricycle. They also enable the child to practice using the legs together in different ways. Such toys are often very inexpensive at garage sales.
