Observe how the child reacts when given choices during daily routines.

Elicitation Strategy

Depending on the situation (daily routine, play time, etc.), let the child choose what he wants.

Behavior Observed

The child makes a choice between two or three options based on preferences.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help early childhood educators and parents understand that giving children choices helps the children gain autonomy and also learn about themselves. Adults should comment to the child about what they are learning about their preferences and desires.
