Self-initiates, plans, and organizes problem solving without assistance

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch any routine of the day (dressing, bathing, eating, etc.) that the child possibly can independently orchestrate.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child to set up the activity with all that will be needed. Then ask the child to narrate what happens first, next, etc.

Behavior Observed

The child plans and gets the needed materials, organizes the required actions, and solves problems if they arise.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help early childhood educators and parents understand that autonomy leads to self-sufficiency and self-confidence. It also helps children understand that they can problem solve on their own. Encourage children to do as much independently as they can, even if the outcome is not perfect!
