Observe during bath time or doll play.

If the child is in the bathtub or playing house with a doll engage in wash-up play. Talk about the baby and what is dirty, let the child choose which body parts to wash. Sing, “This the way we wash our face, etc.” As each body part is washed discuss what it does.

The child knows the body parts and functions, his gender, and abilities.

Self-identity involves the child knowing who he is and what he can do. Encourage parents to talk about body parts, gender, etc., especially during bath time. Parents can talk about body parts during dressing as well. Having a washable baby doll allows the child to practice using the terms as he bathes and dresses the baby.
