Gazes into parents’ eyes; begins to recognize family members

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe during parent-child interaction during routines or face-to-face engagement.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

Observe the eye gaze of the infant when the parent is 8- 10 inches away and engaging the child with vocalization.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help parents understand the importance of very frequent touch and eye gaze. The tiny infant sees best at 8-10 inches, so hold the baby close when talking to him. Attachment begins at birth and builds as the infant comes to expect and desire positive engagement with parents.
