“Woos” adult with sounds, smiles, gestures

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe natural interactions between the adult and infant.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The infant smiles and makes vocalizations to interact with the adult.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to respond to the overtures of the infant. When babies are ignored, they stop trying to interact. Help early parents understand that this early vocal play is the foundation of later language and social turn-taking. Take time for vocal, face-to-face communication!
