Watch the adult and child playing with a toy or sharing bits of food.
Ask the adult to take turns sharing an object.
Watch the child look at the object then the adult. See if the child watches the adult’s actions with the object. Does he wait for the adult to have a turn?
Help early childhood educators and parents understand how important it is for them to play with their child. Teach early childhood educators and parents how to be a play partner: watch and follow what the child does; wait for the child to look at you, then do something new to model; then wait for the child to take a turn. Label toys and actions to teach language. Respond to the child’s successful actions.
